  • Royal Academy of Dance (R.A.D.) Ballet Program

Dance Theme’s core ballet program is based on the internationally renowned syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dance (R.A.D.). We are fortunate to have two fully certified R.A.D. teachers on staff, which allows our students to be entered for official R.A.D. examinations when they have achieved the required standard. Please see below for more information about R.A.D. ballet.

    About the R.A.D.

The Royal Academy of Dance (R.A.D.) was founded in 1920 in London, England. It established a system of examining and accrediting ballet teachers, who then teach a carefully devised, structured, and progressive syllabus to their students.

Today, the R.A.D. sets a worldwide standard for the teaching of classical ballet, with over 15 000 members across 82 countries. R.A.D. Registered Teachers must certify through a variety of different programs and pass a stringent set of exams before being given official registered teacher status. They are also required to participate in a yearly Continuing Professional Development program, ensuring that when you choose an R.A.D. teacher you can be confident that you are receiving the best possible training.

For more information about the R.A.D. organization, check out www.rad.org.uk.

    About R.A.D. Levels

The R.A.D. syllabus begins with Pre-Primary and Primary, and then progresses on to Grades 1-8. Known as the “Graded” levels, these provide solid technical training as well as offer an achievable examination goal for the majority of students.

There are also the “Vocational Grades”, consisting of Intermediate Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1, and Advanced 2. These levels are intended for students who may potentially be interested in pursuing a career in dance, or for the more serious dance student.

At Dance Theme, we offer our intermediate and advanced students the opportunity to study both the Graded levels and the Vocational Graded levels.

    About R.A.D. Exams

Taking R.A.D. exams provides students with a meaningful goal to work towards, as well as being an important reference point for parents and students to understand their child’s current level of achievement and progress.

Students are recommended for Graded and Vocational Graded exams at the discretion of their teacher. Typically exams are held at Dance Theme towards the beginning of June. Further information about R.A.D. examinations for those students recommended to take an exam will be distributed towards the end of December.

American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum

We are very excited to bring another element to our ballet program this year by adding optional classes in the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum! Miss Heather has returned from her time in New York as an American Ballet Theatre Certified Teacher in all levels of ABT’s National Training Curriculum (a distinction only 7 other teachers in Canada hold!), and is thrilled to be able to give Dance Theme’s intermediate and advanced students the opportunity to train in this incredible curriculum. Please see below for some more information.

About the ABT National Training Curriculum

ABT’s National Training Curriculum is a program for the development and training of young students that embraces sound ballet principles and incorporates elements of the French, Italian and Russian schools of training. Under the direction of ABT Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie, ABT’s National Training Curriculum was designed and written by American Ballet Theatre master teachers who have trained thousands of professional dancers currently appearing on stage in major international ballet companies. The ABT National Training Curriculum is the syllabus that is currently taught at American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in New York City, as well as at many other major professional ballet institutions worldwide. The full ABT Curriculum consists of levels from Pre-Primary to Level 7, as well as a partnering (pas de deux) syllabus for advanced students.

ABT National Training Curriculum Classes at Dance Theme

This year we are offering our students who are entering R.A.D. Grade 6 or higher (2014/15 dance year) the opportunity to take one additional class per week in the ABT National Training Curriculum if they choose. This will be a 2-hour intensive ballet class, including pointe work, studying the ABT syllabus and possibly even working towards the exciting opportunity to take an ABT examination at American Ballet Theatre’s studios in New York City! This year we hope to offer two levels of ABT classes: ABT Level 3 (suitable for students entering RAD Grade 6 and RAD Intermediate Foundation) and ABT Level 4 (suitable for students in RAD Grade 7 and RAD Intermediate or higher).

Although the ABT classes are open to any students of the required level, we expect this program to be of particular interest to those of you seeking out as much ballet training as possible. Together with the RAD training already offered, the addition of ABT classes to our program enables us to provide our students with a world-class ballet education that is unmatched in Edmonton!

If you would like more information about ABT classes, please speak to Miss Heather. Further information can also be found at http://www.abt.org/education/nationaltrainingcurr.asp.
